Latest 2015-2016 WINTER TRAIL News:
Oct 1st, 2015
A portion of the Winter Trail to Bettles from the Dalton Highway passing through Jim River Canyon was destroyed by several mudslides during the heavy rainfalls of the 2014 summer season. An unsuccessful attempt to re-route a three mile bypass around the slides was made in February of 2015. The incorrect re-routing led to the revocation of the City's ROW permit and a fine levied by the BLM against the City.
The officials at the Fairbanks BLM office are working closely with the present City Council and staff to expedite a new application for a Winter Trail Right of Way permit along an alternate alignment surveyed by City and BLM personnel September 22nd, 2015.
We will keep the public posted via this forum as the application process proceeds.
In the coming Winter Season, updates on the construction progress of the trail will be posted on this website.
If and when the Trail is officially approved by the City to meet the Conditions and Standards as specified in the new Permit (if granted) and the Trail is inspected for Permit compliance by BLM officials, the City will officially open the Trail for use as prescribed by the Terms of the Permit.
At such time, the official Trail opening date, road conditions and any restrictions will be made available for the public to view on this webpage...
DO NOT JEOPARDISE THE PRIVILEGE OF THE CITY'S ROW PERMIT:
IT WILL BE CONSIDERED A TRESPASS TO USE THE TRAIL FOR TRAVEL BY ANY MOTORIZED VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE OFFICIAL TRAIL OPENING....
VIDEO SURVEILLANCE AND MOTION-TRIGGERED CAMERAS WILL BE EMPLOYED TO ENFORCE CLOSURES AND COMPLIANCE WITH IMPOSED RESTRICTIONS. BLM PERSONNEL WILL CITE VIOLATORS ACCORDINGLY!
